In her 2015 hit “Good as Hell,” Lizzo famously said:
“I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100% that bitch, even when I’m crying crazy.”
I thought about those lyrics as I took a break to reflect on the many Step 1 practice sets and NBMEs I’ve worked through in preparation for retaking the exam. While Lizzo found solace in the certainty of her identity, I found myself struggling to confidently claim the label of the successful student I’ve been working so hard to become.
Let’s do the math:
- I’ve restarted UWorld three times, for a total of four passes.
- I’ve met with three different academic advisors to reassess my timeline and needs.
- I’ve registered for Step 1 twice.
- And I’ve cried at least once every week during this year-plus-long study journey.
Unlike Lizzo, I don’t feel 100% and I wish I did. I wish I could consistently focus on the progress (however slow it may feel) that is happening.
But here are the facts:
- My UWorld averages have improved with each pass: from 35% on my first pass to 58% on this final one.
- Taking practice NBMEs has become second nature. I’ve built routines I trust.
- I’m more willing to recognize and internalize the positive things, both in myself and in what others see in me.
So here’s the verdict:
Maybe I’ll never feel 100%. But I have put in the work. And hopefully, it will pay off. Plus, Lizzo’s songs are quite catchy and great for a prep exam motivation playlist.
